Operating principle
Overview
Oxidation ditches operate based on an activated sludge process in a closed-loop recirculation system, combined with surface aeration equipment that both provides oxygen and creates a continuous flow. During recirculation, wastewater passes through areas with different oxygen concentrations: aerobic and anaerobic. This natural oxygen distribution allows for the simultaneous occurrence of two biological processes:
- Aerobic: microorganisms decompose organic matter and convert ammonia (NH₄⁺) into nitrate (NO₃⁻);
- Anaerobic: a portion of the nitrate is converted into nitrogen gas (N₂).
Thanks to the combination of these two zones in the same tank, the oxidation ditch simultaneously treats BOD/COD, nitrifies, and denitrifies without the need for multiple separate tanks. Water from the oxidation ditch returns to the settling tank for sludge separation; the sludge in the settling tank is recirculated back to the ditch, ensuring stable operation.
